Murder charges will be filed against at least nine inmates at Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, which has seen riots and massacres in recent years and is widely considered the country’s most dangerous prison.

Ecuador’s Attorney General’s office on Tuesday said nine inmates will be charged with murder as a result. The penitentiary, located in the coastal city of Guayaquil, has a history of bloody disturbances, most notably the 2021 riot that claimed 119 lives.
